Frida Kahlo was born in Coyoacán, now a neighborhood of Mexico City, and her life was filled with challenges and artistic triumphs. At just six years old, she was struck by infantile paralysis in her right leg, an event that would profoundly influence her life and art. But it was another tragic incident, a serious bus accident when she was 18, that inspired her to take up painting.

She spent months in bed, bandaged and struggling with unbearable pain, until she decided to find her spiritual strength in art. Kahlo's mother attached mirrors to her sickbed, allowing Frida to paint herself.

Frida Kahlo is known for her powerful self-portraits, often with flower crowns on her head, vibrant clothing and piercing gaze. Her works reflect a deeply personal expression of pain, fear and loneliness, but also of determination and zest for life. She broke taboos and created controversial works, such as her detailed depiction of the suicide of actress Dorothy Hale.

Her oeuvre, consisting of 143 paintings of which 55 self-portraits, has a lasting impact on the art world. The “blue house” where Kahlo was born and died is now the Frida Kahlo Museum, a tribute to her life and legacy, and a place of pilgrimage for admirers from around the world who want to experience her unique vision and indomitable spirit.
