Vincent van Gogh always wanted to paint a picture that shows the night. But not as usual, only in black and white. He wanted to use many different colors. It was special that he painted this café terrace in Arles, illuminated by a lantern, directly in the dark. He knew that colors look different at night than during the day.
The first thing that stands out in the painting are the bright yellow, green, and orange tones under the awning, and the deep blue of the starry sky. The houses in the background are dark blue. Van Gogh thought that the light of the lantern made the blue of the sky even more vivid.
Stars
Van Gogh wrote to his sister Wil: "I like to paint at night." He had observed the stars well. Subsequent studies have shown that he painted the stars in the sky exactly as they appeared on the night of September 16 or 17, 1888.
