Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528), born in Nuremberg, was one of the most important artists of the Northern Renaissance. A painter, draughtsman, maker of woodcuts and copper engravings, and art theorist, Dürer had an enormous influence on the art world of his time. His work is characterized by extraordinary versatility, and his contributions to printmaking, which paralleled the rise of printing, made him the most popular and influential Northern European artist of his time.

Dürer was known not only for his paintings, but also for his excellence in engraving and woodcuts. His studio specialized in various printing techniques, with copper engraving being one of his most important tools, making his work available in large editions. He was also known as a geometrist, which added an extra dimension to his work, with a precision that made his nature studies, such as Haas (1502), true masterpieces.

In Hare, Dürer captured nature in an almost photographic manner. This work, which shows a young hare in extreme detail, is often praised for its accuracy and ability to capture the essence of the animal. It is one of the best examples of his artistic powers of observation, and a prime example of the nature studies Dürer would continue to make throughout his career.
