Water Lilies by Claude Monet

The Water Lilies painted by the French impressionist painter Claude Monet is a series of paintings of water lilies, made near the pond in the garden of his studio in Giverny. Monet came up with the idea of making these paintings after he had admired Asian water lilies at the 1889 World's Fair, and decided to set up a water lily nursery in his garden. Monet made many different versions of these works, and painted eighteen different water lily paintings in the period 1899-1900 alone. Currently, the approximately 250 works can be found all over the world in museums such as the Musée Marmottan Monet and the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, the Neue Pinakothek in Munich and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
